Gastro Intestinal Stromal Tumour is a type of cancer that begins in the digestive system, most commonly stomach and small intestine. Making up less than 1% of all gastro tumours, the rate of growth is generally slow and in my case, non aggressive. The cause and prevention methods are still unknown. 

It was diagnosed by a series of imaging tests which included a CT and MRI scan of the abdomen, which showed a 20cm tumour. Further investigations included an endoscopy and a fine needle aspiration biopsy-which collects a small sample of the tumour which is then tested in a laboratory to determine the biological characteristics and best treatment plan. 

Due to the size, targeted drug therapy or oral chemotherapy was issued to shrink the size over a 6 month period and have remained taking this medication since surgery, 9 years on. This enabled surgery to remove the mass safely, which took around 5 hours under general anaesthetic. 

With a significant risk of return of regrowth in its original organ, or this can spread to surrounding tissues and organs.

3 monthly follow-up visits for MRI’s and clinic appointments were made to ensure any regrowth was discovered early. 

My care at The Royal Marsden Hospital in London, was incredible. Voted outstanding by CQC (the care quality commission) they are advanced with cancer research can tailor cancer treatments and spot recurring disease sooner.

With a cancer diagnosis, it is often referred to as ‘a battle’ not only in the physical sense but also with your mind - having to come to terms with receiving a piece of news that changes your course of life. From day one, it has been my priority to remain positive, maintaining optimal mental and spiritual health, which demonstrated by science, plays an essential role in physical health. Mental distress can lead to physical dysfunction, whilst healthy states of mind can boost physical well-being.

The tools which have enabled me to do this I have continued to use daily, have included regular exercise including reformer Pilates and hiking, meditation practice & sound healing have increased my mind-to-body connection and the most significant change in my lifestyle was nourishing my body with non processed foods, including fish, fruit and vegetables, nuts and seeds and organic meat with lots of healthy fats and protein - I’m excited to share my healthy recipes with you!
